Control of algae is the most important agenda in any pool care protocol. Algae are single celled organisms similar to plant life, and are capable of using sunlight in order to produce their own nutrients for growth and reproduction. They have the capacity to reproduce every 20 minutes, which can easily result in an unpleasant and visibly contaminated pool within days.
 
AQUAGUARD PC is recommended for all pool types, and is effective against blue-green, black spot and mustard algae.
 
QACs are the most commonly used agents in the control of algae and are preferable to heavily chlorinated pools. They possess a two pronged activity in algae control; in addition to their algicidal action, they also possess detergent activity, which prevents algae from adhering to, and establishing colonies on the walls of the pools. QACs are also highly active at extremely low concentrations against all commonly found bacteria.
 
Under adverse conditions, algae can produce spores, which are resistant to routinely used levels of chlorine. In combination with QACs, metals such as copper can prevent spores from germinating and add a third level of synergistic protection for swimming pools.
 
Algae are most susceptible to algaecides at low pH, so an acid base cleaner is recommended before QUATs are added. Flocculants aid in settling of dead algal and bacterial cells and organic debris, and improve the clarity of the water.
